Nestlé expansion backed

Posted by William C on September 23rd, 2011

PLANNERS have backed an expansion of Nestlé’s Product Technology Centre, which could create 35 new jobs.

The extension will be three storeys high and be placed next to Nestlé’s Insight centre, screened from public view by trees, and will include a new landscaped plaza and entrance foyer.

Nestlé has said the expansion will allow it to increase its workforce from 190 to 225 in two years, and provide improved meeting and conference facilities to cater for up to 250 delegates.

Leading City of York Councillor Dave Merrett welcomed the development as ‘incredibly good news for the city,’ saying it showed further commitment to the city by the company. He added that the building was of an attractive design.

Council leader James Alexander said there had been a vote of confidence for a good planning scheme from an important employer, and this was an opportunity for economic growth and increasing jobs that was not to be missed.

UK Bans ‘Too Perfect’ Julia Roberts L’Oreal Ad

Posted by James Campos on July 26th, 2011

Julia Roberts looks like she hasnt aged a day in her new makeup ad. Now British advertising authorities have told LOreal it went too far touching up Roberts—and Christy Turlingtons—face. The cosmetics firm was ordered to pull two overly airbushed magazine ads featuring the models after the regulator decided that the ads—one of which touted a foundations ability to create “natural light”—had been retouched to an extent likely to mislead consumers, the BBC reports.

LOreal, citing contractual obligations, declined to provide the regulator with pre-production copies of the photo. It did admit to lightening Turlingtons skin and reducing dark shadows around her eyes, among other tweaks, but claims it left signs of aging like crows feet. A lawmaker who has long lobbied against unrealistic images of women in advertising hailed the decision. “Excess

Entrepreneurs develop app to better taxi experience

Posted by James Campos on July 26th, 2011

Two Sydney entrepreneurs have developed a free smartphone application to improve the taxi ordering service for both passengers and drivers.

goCatch allows taxi passengers to see where nearby available taxis are and book them via their smartphones. Users can then see the location of their taxi in real-time as it approaches on the map, saving the uncertainty of when a taxi will arrive.

Designed by Andrew Campbell and Ned Moorfield, the app was developed using the prize money from two innovation competitions: the Peter Farrell Cup and John Heine Entrepreneurial Challenge.

goCatch connects drivers and customers without the middle-man.

Happy Meals Get Healthier

Posted by James Campos on July 26th, 2011

Are Happy Meals soon to become Healthy Meals? Well, at least healthier: McDonalds, under pressure from nutrition advocates, will add a serving of fruit or vegetables to all of the childrens meals, the LA Times reports. But the French fries will still be included, albeit in a smaller serving size. Mickey Ds says it tried to eliminate the fries entirely, but customers simply expect fries in their Happy Meals: “When we did it without fries, there was a huge disappointment factor,” says the companys US president.

The new serving of fries will be 1.1 ounces, down from the previous 2.4 ounces. The healthy side item will often be apple slices, but carrots, raisins, pineapple slices, and mandarin oranges may also be served. On average, the changes will result in 20% fewer calories—and no increased prices for customers. T
